Fullerton Municipal Airport’s roots can be traced back to 1913 with barnstormers and crop dusters using the empty field as a landing strip. The airport’s formal history began in 1928 when Fullerton Municipal Airport opened on the site of an abandoned sewer farm. The airport was managed by the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce until 1941 when the city of Fullerton took over ownership. During World War II, Fullerton Municipal Airport was used by the Navy and U.S. Army Air Corps.

In 1949, Bill Barris and Dick Riedel departed Fullerton Municipal Airport in the Sunkist Landy and embarked on a record-breaking endurance flight. They would land back at Fullerton Municipal Airport 42 days later, never having touched the ground. President Gerald Ford also used the airfield on one his trips back to his home in Orange County.
