Reykjavík Airport History
The airport was built during the Second World War by the British army.
In 1946 the airport was handed over to the government of Iceland who established the Icelandic Civil Aviation Authority to operate it.
It has since been expanded and improved, however there is large debate around the future of the airport.
Due to the city’s growth around the airport, many want it to be closed.
It has been suggested that operations could be relocated to Keflavik International or that a new airport could be built outside the city.
